1.pm Yoga and Meditation for Men
The afternoon will start with a slow flow of classic yoga postures to build heat, move energy and prepare the body and mind for the ultimate release of Restorative Yoga and Yoga Nidra guided meditation.
Restorative Yoga
Restorative Yoga can help restore the body to its parasympathetic nervous system and induce the relaxation response, counteracting the ‘fight or flight’ response and promote feelings of wellbeing, making you more resistant to the negative effects of stress.
Postures are held passively for an extended period of time, either seated or lying down. We use supportive props, such as bolsters, blocks, blankets, straps and eye pillows, you will be able to completely relax and hold poses for longer - with no effort. Your body will gradually open up and sink naturally into deep, restorative relaxation. The stretching is passive, which eliminates unnecessary straining.
Yoga Nidra
The session will finish with a guided Yoga Nidra meditation, one of the easiest forms of meditation. All you need to do is lie down, be still, listen to my voice and follow my instructions which will take you around the body focusing on different body parts, taking your awareness deep into your inner world.
You'll then be guided through different sensations such as feeling hot or cold and through a list of visualisations. All this takes your mind from a beta awakened state with lots of brain activity, to a state of alpha which is a more relaxed state. From there you go down to a theta state and then down to a delta state which is the most restorative state in which your organs regenerate and the stress hormone cortisol is removed from your body. It's a 'powering down' for your brain and body which, in our culture not many people get a chance to experience on a regular basis as they don't get down to these states of awareness. Known for its ability to assist those struggling with insomnia, anxiety, depression, pain, or the effects of trauma in their life, Yoga Nidra triggers the relaxation response, balances the nervous system, boosts the immune system which helps prevent illness, promotes healing and slows down premature aging. The restorative effect of a yoga nidra session (30-60 minutes) also stimulates the pineal gland, releasing melatonin and is said to be the restful equivalent of 3-4 hours sleep. With a regular practice, you'll be less triggered by the stresses of daily life, relationships improve and general well-being and happiness increase. I often include snippets of a restorative practice in our 1 hour classes but creating time for a longer session will allow you to experience this on a much deeper level.
