I found out a disturbing fact recently. That 6 men a day commit suicide in Australia. That’s over 2000 lives gone, every year. How sad, and totally preventable.
World Mental Health Day has just happened. It’s great that this issue gets so much more notice these days, rather than mental health being shoved under the carpet. For men, the typical approach of been told to ‘toughen up’, or ‘putting a lid on it’, is fast becoming a thing of the past. It’s so engrained in me though, and probably all of my peers around my age. It’s how I was brought up - and it’s not just your parents who would have consciously or sub-consciously conditioned you, it would have been your mates and society as well. There were a few occasions in the past when I’ve caught myself automatically telling my son to stop crying. I don’t think I’ve used the phrase, ‘toughen up’, but I’ve probably used an equivalent Pommie expression. SO are YOU OK????? It’s so good to see the question being asked.
